Buxar is the headquarter of Buxar district.

Buxar gets its name from a lake named Aghsar , which in course of time became Baghsar and took the present form that is Buxar.

Buxar is considered to be the best wheat growing area in Bihar. The forest area of Buxar district is very thin due to deforestation. Common trees are mango, seasum, mahua, bamboo, etc.
