About the Museum

Located inside the premises of verdant Umaid Bhawan Palace Gardens in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, the Sardar Government Museum takes you back into the historic era of Jodhpur and its extravagant culture. The museum was constructed in 1909 under the governance of Maharaja Umaid Singhji and was designed by the famous Edwardian architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester. After its construction, the museum opened its gate to the general public in the year 1936.

Renowned for its fascinating and truly mesmerizing exhibits of the antique items of the bygone era, the Sardar Government Museum is divided into several galleries such as Archaeology, Natural History, Textiles, Armory, Picture Gallery, and Industrial Arts, and boasts an extensive collection of miniature paintings, local arts, inscriptions, metallic objects, and stone statues. While exploring the galleries of the museum, visitors can also admire the stunning exhibition of local crafts and imageries of Jain Tirthankars. The magnificent museum building houses over 400 stone sculptures and 1900 paintings that adorn the walls of the museum. There is also a separate section of military exhibits which comprises a prolific collection of wooden and brass models of early aircraft, armors, weaponry, and battleships which is a different and captivating sight to perceive.

The young visitors of the museum have also been kept in mind as the museum is also known for its wide assortment of stuffed animals which include varied types of desert birds packed in glass houses. Not only this, the museum has a public library and a small zoo to entertain its visitors. Known for its marvelous treasure trove, Sardar Government Museum is an institutional member of the Museum Association of India and is thus, one of the best places to visit in Jodhpur.
