Proddatur

Proddatur is a city in the YSR Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh.It is the second-largest town in the former Kadapa district. Proddatur is the oldest municipality which was constituted before the Independence. Proddatur City is a municipality, and also the Mandal headquarters of Proddatur Mandal. Proddatur is also known as Second Bombay becauseof the nature of business and Second Mysore for its grandiosity in Dussehra celebrations. It is the 13th largest urban agglomeration in Andhra Pradesh. In 1915, It became a municipality, later it is upgraded from a 3rd-grade municipality to a 1st-grade municipality.In 1998, it became Special Grade Municipality.

Proddatur is situated on the banks of the Penna River. This town is the center for small towns like Mydukur, Jammalamadugu, Pulivendula, and yerraguntla

History of Proddatur

Proddatur City got its name from the history of Ramayana where Lord Ram resided her. There are many temples in Proddatur. There is a temple called Rameshwaram on the banks of the Penna River that is believed to be the place where Lord Rama resided during his period of exile.

Places to visit

  • Kanyaka Parameswari Temple : Kanyaka Parameswari Temple is situated at a distance of 1.3 km from Proddatur. This temple is devoted to Sri Kanyaka Parameswari, a form or avatar of Goddess Parvati. The Temple is also known as Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Temple. The basic structure of the Temple was built in 1890 AD. The Goddess Sri Kanyaka Parameswari is the major deity of the Arya Vysya community.The temple is built in a modern and updated style of architecture. The basement of the temple is about 10 feet in height from the ground level. The ceiling is based on a wide and round pillar. The Shala (house or covered pavilion) is built on a square, and Rangoon teak wood rafters are used to support the temple’s ceiling. The temple has a giant and impressive tower. There are four broad majestically tall and impressive pillars in front of the sanctum sanctorum of Kanyaka Parameswari. Every day in this temple Shodashopachara Puja is performed. All Pujas are performed according to the Smartha Agama.
  • Gandikota Fort : Situated at a distance of 34 km from Proddatur Town, Gandikota Fort is a huge fort encompassed by canyons, forbidden hills, and monoliths. Gandikota is a secured and safe fort founded by Kapa Raja of nearby Bommanapalle village in 1123. Beside the Ganikota Fort, there is a Pennar river flowingin the valley which makes it looks like a massive canyon. It is one of the major tourist spots in the Kadapa District. The Gandikota Fort is a combination of nature, culture, and traditions of the past and beautiful architecture.
