Formerly known as Anand Bhavan and located in Allahabad/Prayagraj, the Swaraj Bhavan is the familial property of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and is the place where our former Prime Minister, Late Smt. Indira Gandhi was born. The place was owned by Moti Lal Nehru, father of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, which he donated to the government as the headquarters for the Congress Committee in 1930. Currently, the place has been modified and is being used as a public museum housing the Jawahar Planetarium.
Managed by Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Fund, the museum has over 42 rooms and the visitors can see some amazing historic collectibles, one of the significant ones being the Charkha used by Mahatma Gandhi. The walls of the museum are adorned with family photographs of the Nehru family and some shots from the period of the Indian freedom movement. An interesting feature in the building of the museum is an underground room that is known to be used for Congress meetings during the period of Indian independence.
In 1970, the then Prime Minister of India – Indira Gandhi, donated this ancestral house for public cause and ordered to convert it into a museum in remembrance of her father and grandfather. Other than a place of a collection of memorabilia of the Nehru family, the museum also serves as a venue for teaching art and craft to people, and a stunning light and sound show is held every day at the Bhavan. It is an ideal place for history buffs and those who want to know more about the beloved Chacha Nehru.
