Hamirsar Lake was extensively developed, with a channel and tunnels that used to convey water from three rivers to fill the town's reservoirs. Nevertheless, during the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, this water infrastructure was severely disrupted and damaged. The municipality and the inhabitants of Bhuj took steps to restore the water system to its original state in order to meet the demands of its residents once more. In 2003, this was accomplished. The water of Hamirsar Lake is now drinkable. Rao Hamir, a Jadega monarch who reigned roughly 450 years ago, inspired the name of this man-made lake.
