Its headquarters is at Uttarkashi city.
The district has six Tehsils - Barkot, Dunda, Bhatwadi, Chinyalisaur, Purola and Mori.
88% of the population spoke Garhwali, 7.28% Hindi, and 2.17% Nepali as their first language according to the 2011 census.
