Venkatagiri is a town situated in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh. The town is a municipality and Mandal headquarters of Venkatagiri Mandal. Venkatagiri's old name is Kali Mili. Venkatagiri town is famous for its Handloom Cotton Sarees. The important Temples of Venkatagiri areRamalingeswra Swami Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple,Poleramma Temple, Prasanna Venkateswara Swami Temple, and Perumalla Swami Temple. The is occupied with a total area of 25.89 km2. The total population of Venkatagiri town is 52,688.Venkatagiri Rural comprises 58 Revenue Villages.

History of Venkatagiri

The original name of Venkatagiri town was Kalimilli. This name was continued till the 17thcentury and was ruled by Gobburi Polygars under the Vijaynagar Kingdom. Later Gobburi Polygars was defeated by Nayak of Madurantakam and the nephew of Raja of Velugodu, Recherla Venkatadri Naidu, he was another dependent under the Venkatapathi Raya II of the Aravidu dynasty of Vijayanagar. After the batter, the village was renamed Venkatagiri. During the middle period of the 17thcentury,the Velogothi Kingstransferred their capital to Venkatagiri and it lasted as a Zamindari till the time of independence. This town was located between two rivers,the Godderu river, and the Kaivalya river.

  • Venkatagiri Fort : Venkatagiri Fort is one of the famous tourist attractions places of Venkatagiri. The Fort was constructed in 1775 AD. The Venkatagiri Fort is also known by the name of Venkatagiri Durgam. Encompassed with the dense forest, Venkatagiri Fort is built and designed in the south Indian architectural style. The foremost part of the Fort is called Indra Mahal fort which looks very attractive. The Venkatagiri Fort is perfect for those interested in the culture and art that signifies history. This fort is one of the best attractionsin town and is always crowded with tourists. The perfect time to visit this fort is between November to February.
  • Venkatagiri hill : Situated 13 km from Venkatagiri town, Venkatagiri hill is one of the best tourist attractions of the Nellore District. Venkatagiri hill is very famous because of its challenging trekking area and alluring views. Surrounded by the dense forest the Venkatagiri hills looks very attractive from the hilltop. During sunrise time, the area looks majestic from the hilltop.
