Saga Dawa Festival

Saga Dawa Festival is one of the biggest and most popular festivals of Sikkim. It is a month-long festival that honors Buddha Sakyamuni, the son of the king of the Shakyas, a small clan whose kingdom was located at the foothills of the Himalayas, whose birth, enlightenment, and nirvana took place in the fourth month of Tibetan Calendar and reaches its peak on 31 May 2022. It is believed that prayers are multiplied thousand-fold during this time, following which people are much more merciful than usual. During the festival, people generally refrain from killing animals and release captured animals, like fish into their natural habitats with sincere prayers. A large number of devotees visit Mt Kailash during Saga Dawa Festival to attend the flagpole-erecting ceremony at Tarboche and do Kora around Mt Kailash, which is known to be the greatest activity for Tibetan Buddhists.
