Nagpur is a city in the west Indian state of Maharashtra, and is also the winter capital of this state. Is the third largest city in Maharashtra and the 13th largest city in India by population.

FESTIVALS

Nagpur consists of a majority of Maharashtrians and Hindus. So, most Hindu festivals and few others are celebrated grandly in this city. These include:

  • Maha Shivratri – People worship Lord Shiva and fast for long hours).
  • Makar Sankranti – An auspicious harvest festival celebrated in the month of January.
  • Holi – Festival of colours; celebrated in the month of March.
  • Marbat – A festival locally hosted in Nagpur with dances, plays and rituals; It is believed by the locals here that through this festival, all evil forces giving troubles to people here are eliminated. 
  • Gudi padwa – Marathi New Year Day (celebrated all over Maharashtra state).
  • Navrathri & Dussehra – A 10-day festival, where Goddess Durga is revered).
  • Ganesh Chaturthi – A major festival in the state of Maharashtra, this is celebrated in all cites and town in this state, to worship Lord Ganesha (who is also the son of Lord Shiva).

METRO

The construction of a rapid transit system for Nagpur city, called Nagpur Metro began after being approved by Indian government in the year 2014, in February with an estimated total cost of ₹8,260 crore. In 2019, 2 lines – Orange line and Aqua line, began operating partially between some areas within Nagpur like Sitabuldi, Khapri and Lokamanya Nagar, and a few other areas. Hence this metro can be taken by people when travelling between any of these stations which are connected on wither of these lines.

FOOD

Nagpur is known for being one of the largest producers of oranges in India. Apart from oranges and dishes made with them, various delicious foods can be found in Nagpur’s eateries and homes. Here are some local delicacies to try in Nagpur:

  • Tarri Poha – A spicy flat rice dish made with onions, tomatoes spices and peanuts, and served with a special local gravy called “Tarri”).
  • Orange Burfi – A special Burfi (fudge/sweet) flavored with fresh local oranges; a special at Haldiram’s hotel – which is the main outlet of one of the biggest snack brands in India, and situated in Nagpur.
  • Param ki Daal – a special lentil dish that is exclusively available at an eatery called “Param ki Dhaba” in Nagpur.
  • Patodi – A Maharashtrian dish, made with Besan (chickpea flour) shaped into flat squares and cooked in a red, spicy curry/gravy.
  • Matka Biryani – A rice dish cooked (with vegetables, spices and meat, and served) in a terracotta pot.
