About the Museum

One of the most fascinating places to be in the beautiful temple city of Bhubaneswar is the Regional Science Centre spreading on 8 acres of land and was established on 18th September 1989. This is one of the 26 science museums under the network of the National Council of Science Museums, an autonomous council under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. The museum aims at promoting and inculcating scientific temper amongst people of all ages, especially students, in the state of Odisha through a wide range of exhibitions, special shows, and conversational programs.

The museum currently has three galleries – Motion gallery, Mathematics gallery, and Popular Science gallery. Apart from the galleries, the museum has a science park with very fascinating and fun outdoor exhibits and a Prehistoric Life Park consisting of animated dinosaur models coordinated with a story-telling light and sound show. The Motion gallery displays various aspects of motion in a holistic sense – its origin, celestial motion, atmospheric motion, motion inside the Earth, motion inside out body, and even ‘Motion that is not’- illusory motion. The gallery consists of 40 exhibits showcasing cosmological motion, wave motion, the motion of subatomic particles, mechanics of motion, etc.

The ‘Mathematics’ gallery unties the complex world of mathematics and its use in our day-to-day life. The gallery also throws light on the contribution of India during the Vedic period towards the subject without being complex and easy to understand for children as well. The gallery engages the visitors with a lot of fun and exciting exhibits which gives them an opportunity to interact, explore, and untie the anonymities behind everything in a fascinating way. The widespread Science Park has numerous exhibits that are beautifully placed over the landscape and enhance the amazingness of the Science Centre. A spectacular light and sound show is shown in the evening which narrates the story of the evolution of life and planet Earth and some behavior of animals that went extinct with time.

The museum conducts frequent Teacher’s Training Program, Creativity Ability Camp, Vacation Hobby Camp, Popular Science Lectures, Sky Observation Programs, Science Dramas, Science Fairs, etc. Some special shows include 3D movies, Taramandal planetarium shows, Science Magic shows, Super-Cool Body shows, etc. The Centre also organizes science exhibitions and Travelling Exhibitions on existing topics that take into consideration different parts of India throughout the year.
