Mini Switzerland of India

Often referred to as the ‘’Mini Switzerland of India’’ due to its topographical resemblance with Switzerland, Khajjiar is a small but beautiful town located close to Dalhousie in the Chambal district of Himachal Pradesh and is an ideal location for a quick vacation in the mountains. It is known for its picture-perfect grassy meadows, a pristine lake, mountains surrounding the valley, and adventure sports such as paragliding, zorbing, and horse-riding. Situated at a height of 6500 feet, Khajjiar tempts visitors to experience its breathtaking beauty again and again.

Khajjiar is also known for its 9-hole golf course which is a well-maintained ground and a must-visit place if you want to try your skills. This saucer-shaped meadow is enveloped by several Deodar trees and has a lake in the middle which remains frozen during the peak winter months. The vast stretches of dense forests and meadows constitute the natural beauty of Khajjiar and its pleasing weather enhances the enchanting effect it sprinkles on tourists.

Walk wherever you want to and feel the damp grass below your bare feet, breathe the fresh cool air, and give a feast to your eyes by beholding the spectacular panorama laid out by nature. The dense forests that envelop the meadows of Khajjiar are abode to some lovely looking quaint villages. Two of the famous villages are Rota and Ladi which are known for big Apple orchards and astounding views of the snow-covered Kailash Mountain. Best Time to Visit

Khajjiar can be visited throughout the year with the summers being pleasant and the meadows are lush green covered with wildflowers. The winters, especially January and February can be very freezing and experiences snowfall. The roads might be a little unpredictable during this time of the year and heavy snowfall might spoil the trip.

How to Reach?

  • By Flight: The nearest airport from Khajjiar is in Dharamshala called the Gaggal airport which is at a distance of 120km. Buses and Cabs are easily available from the airport directly to the town.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is located at a distance of 118km in Pathankot. Trains from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Bhatinda are available till Pathankot. Taxis can be hired to complete the remaining journey by road.
  • By Road: Roads are well-connected to most of the neighboring cities and towns in Himachal. You can drive from Dalhousie or take a bus from there to Khajjiar. You can take any bus going towards Chamba.

Khajjiar Lake is perched at a height of 1920 meters and offers an exquisite bird’s eye view of the surroundings as it is situated at the center of the town.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is another one of the top sights in Khajjiar and houses wildlife such as Bears and deer along with a diverse range of flora and several migratory birds in the winters. The wildlife sanctuary has several trekking trails that visitors can trek here as well.

Khajji Nag Temple

Khajji Nag Temple is the most significant pilgrimage in Khajjiar which is dedicated to Khaji Nag – the God of Serpents. During winters the temple looks stunningly pretty with all the snow covering its sides and the roof.

Lord Shiva Statue

This is one of the tallest statues in Himachal Pradesh with a height of 85 feet. It is a bronze polished statue that is visited by devotees and is a sight to behold during winters when covered with snow.

Golden Devi Temple

Deriving its name from the golden dome it has, the temple is in the vicinity of the Khajjiar Lake and can be visited to offer your prayers.
