Kadiri

Kadiri is one of the major cities in Sri Sathya Sai District of Andhra Pradesh. Kadiri is a Special Grade Municipal City Council and headquarters of Kadiri Revenue Division and Kadiri Mandal. Kadiri City is famous for its Saffron flowers (Autumn Crocus) and Jasmine flowers, and Kadiri Saffron is broadly popular in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The place Kadiri has many things to explore which includes spiritual places like Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, built during the Vijaynagaram rulers and Yogi Vemana Samadhi, and places to visit on holiday and to enjoy with friends and families like Batrepalli Waterfalls.

History Of Kadiri

The Kadiri city known for saffron and Jasmin flowers was once the largest Taluka (Tehsil) of Andhra Pradesh during the Taluka system. The name Kadiri has a unique story, the place was earlier named Khadripuram as khadara plants were broadly found in the surrounding forests. Later the name Khadri was converted to Kadiri.

One of the famous and oldest Temples in Kadiri, Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple was said to be initiated during the Western Chalukya rule and completed during the Vijayanagara Empire.

Places to visit

  • Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple : Sri Khadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is one of the oldest temples and a major religious spot to visit in Kadiri. It is believed that to kill Hiranya Kasyapa, Lord Vishnu took the avatar (form) of Narasimha Swamy. But later even after killing Hiranya Kasyapa, the anger of Narasimha Swamydidn’t calm and he started roaming around forests and hills in anger. At Sthothadhri hill, near Kadiri Town, Prahaladha and other Devas prayed to calm down Narasimha Swamy. Pleased with prayers, Narasimha Swamy withdrawshis anger at this place. Thus, the Narasimha Swamy Temple situated here is called Prahalada Sametha Narasimha Swamy Temple.It is also said that during the daily Abhishekam the figure of Narasimha Swamy oozes sweateven after wiping it by the priests. Visiting hours for this temple is between 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Batrepalli Waterfalls : Situated in the Talupula Mandal near Kadiri City, Batrepalli Waterfalls is the perfect picnic spot to visit. The water of Batrepalli Waterfall origins from Mallalamma temple located in the Nilgiri Forest and unite with the Batrepalli pond. The waterfalls are close to the Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
  • Yogi Vemana Samadhi : Yogi Vemana Samadhi,the samadhi of Yogi Vemana, an Indian Philosopher and famous Telugu Poet, whose poems were popular because of the use of simple language and native idioms. The way to Yogi Vemana Samadhi also has a very unique view because of the different shapes of rock formations.
  • Thimmamma Marrimanu : Thimmamma Marrimanu is a giant Banyan tree situated at a distance of 26 km from Kadiri City. The name of this tree was maintained since ancient times by the local people. The word ‘marri’ means banyan and ‘manu’ means tree in the Telugu language. Because of the relaxing environment, people used to visit this place to worship and to let their souls in peace. There is also a small temple beneath theThimmamma Marrimanu. A grand jatara (folk theatre) is organized at Thimmamma on the day of the Shivaratri festival.
