The legends say that Gautama Maharishi did farming in the nearby areas of the Ashramam to maintain it. Once while he was farming, he accidentally kills a cowby throwing a darbha (pointed grass, sharp), who was grazing in his paddy field. After this incident, Gautama becomes upset and offers a great Tapas for Lord Shiva in the Brahmagiri mountains. Pleased by his tapas, Lord Shiva wiped away his sin and allowed Ganga to flow on his farm to purify the place (Kovvur). Thus, the river called "Godavari" which means "originated due to killing a cow". It is also called "Gautami" to appreciate the effort of the Gautama Maharishiwhich results in bringing Godavari to earth.Kovvur is a converted name of Guru.It is believed that Gautama established a Kumaraswami temple in the North anda Vijneswara temple in the South of his Ashrama. These Temples are presently known as Vijjeswaram and Kumaradevam.
