Macherla

Macherla is a town in the Palnadu district of Andhra Pradesh. It is the headquarters of MacherlaMandal in the Gurazala revenue division.Macherla Municipality is the civic body of the town and it was constituted in 1983. Macherla is popularly known for the Nagarjuna Sagar dam and for the Nagarjunakonda Island situated in the dam which has a brimming collection of Buddhist weapons, artifacts, and figures.

History of Macherla

Macherla is the capital of the Palnadu region. The name Macherlacame from Mahadevi Cherla. This town is in the heart of Palnadu and has a history of over a thousand years. The famous battle PalnatiYudhdham (War of Palnadu) was fought here between Macherla and Gurazalaaround 1176 AD to 1182 AD. The Palnadu Battle is also known as the Andhra Mahabharatam.

Places to visit

  • Chennakesava Swamy temple : Chennakesava Swamy temple was one of the famous places of Macherla.The temple was built during the regime of the Hai Haya Kings. The main entrance of the temple has a grandidol of Dwajastambam Swamy made with wood and bronze. The visiting hours of Chennakesava Swamy templeare between 5:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Ethipothala Falls : Situated at a distance of 15 km from Macherla, Ethipothala Fallsis a 70 feet (21 m) high river cataract, ofPalnadu district. The Ethipothala Falls is on the Chandravanka river, which is a branch of River Krishna adjoining on its right bank. The waterfall is a blend of three streamsNakkalaVagu, ChandravankaVagu, and TummalaVagu. The mesmerizing beauty of this waterfall looks much more majestic during the dawn.
  • Nagarjunakonda Museum : Situated on the Nagarjunakonda Island, Nagarjunakonda Museumis a Buddhist Museum. This museum is loaded with anassortedcollection of Buddhist structures and artifacts found buried during the construction of the Nagarjunasagardam.TheNagarjunakonda Museum hasa collection that is quite ancient belonging to the 3rd century AD. The fascinating ancient collection features representationsengraved with jataka tales, stone figures of Lord Buddha, weapons and provisionsbelonging to the Stone Age, and old inscriptions, etc.The facts and Knowledgesupplied in the museum is in three languages English, Hindi, and Telugu. The museum is accessible via boat from Nagarjunasagar, the boating service is provided by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department. Bursting with ancient artifacts from the ancient century, this place is an essential place to visit in Macherla.
  • Nagarjuna Sagar dam : Made with Masonry, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is situated across the Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar which sprawl the border between Palnadu district in Andhra Pradeshand Nalgonda district in Telangana.The dam was constructed between 1955 to 1967. One of the earliest structures created under the "modern temples" project initiated for achieving the Green Revolution in India, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is also one of the earliest multi-purpose irrigation and hydroelectric projects of India.
