Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary

The Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area, located in the Upper Gangetic plain in Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1975 and occupies an area of 400.6 square kilometres in the Terai of the Bahraich district. The sanctuary has a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is among the few places in India where fresh water dolphins, also known as Gangetic dolphins, are found in their natural habitat. Facilities like boating in Giriwa river and jungle safaris are also available for travellers.

Dominant Flora

The sanctuary is home to Sal Forest with its associates tree species like Terminalia Alata, Lagerstroemia Parviflora, Adina Cordifonia, Mitragyna Parpiflora, Gamelina Arborea, Holoptelea Intgrifolia, Acacia Catechu, Pterocarpus Marsupium, etc.

Dominant Fauna

Mammals: Guldar, Tiger, Monkey, Langur, Mongoose, Small Indian Mangoose, Small Indian civet, Jackal, Honey Badger, Smooth Indian Otter, Blue Bull, Spotted Dear, Hog Dear, etc.

Birds: Dabchick, Large Cormorant, Lillte cormorant, Grey Heron, White Stocrk, Black strock, White Ibis, Indian Longbilled Vulture, Osprey, etc.

Reptiles: Magar, Ghariyal, Python, Sandboa, Banded crate, Rusel viper , Rat snake and many more.

Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is between the months of November and June.

There are tourist campuses at Motipur and Kakraha, where travellers visiting the sanctuary can stay. The campuses offer a treat of nature that makes the traveler's visit a memorable one but there is no television in the rooms and minimal mobile phone or internet connectivity.

How to Reach

Nearest Train Station: The nearest railway stations are at Kakraha, Murtiha, Nishangarah and Bichhia, located on the Gonda-Bahraich Branch railway line.

Nearest Airport: The nearest airport is located at Amausi, Lucknow which is 215 km away. The sanctuary can be reached from Gonda also, Which is situated on the main railway line from Lucknow to Gorakhpur.

Road Accessibility : The best way to reach Katerniaghat sanctuary is by road from Lucknow, which is 205 km away.
