Vizianagaram is a city situated in the Vizianagaram District of Andhra Pradesh. This city serves as the headquarters of the Vizianagaram district. Occupied with a total area of 29.27 km2, the town has a total population of 228,025.Vizianagaram is one of the major towns in Uttar Andhra (north of Andhra Pradesh)

History of Vizianagaram

Once the essential part of Kalinga, Vizianagaram was ruled by many Hindu emperors of Kalinga. The areas in the north including Srikakulam were under the territory of Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi during the rule of Kubja Vishnuvardhana (624–641) for a short tenure of time. During this ruling period, the Vengi Kingdom extended from Srikakulam in the north to the south are Nellore. Later this area was ruled under Krishna Deva Raya of the Vijayanagara Empire. After a period of time, Nizams ruled Vizianagaram from 1707 to 1753. In 1753 the French people conquered Nizams and ruled the area.

Places to visit

  • Vizianagaram Fort : Constructed by the Maharaj of Vizianagaram, Vijaya Rama Raju, Vizianagaram Fort was built in 1713. The fort is built in a square shape made up of stones, and the four corners of the Fort have barricades in the form of bastions made of stones with a slope on its interior covered with earth fill and strengthened with stone slabs. The fort is accessible by two gates, the gate situated in the east is called Nagar Khana which is engraved with fine architectural designs, and the other gate faces the west side. Inside the fort campus, there are several monuments, palaces, and temples. Two of the major temples are the Hanuman temple, and the Lakshmi temple honored as the Kota Shakto which is considered to be the super deity of the Fort. The Vizianagaram Fort is one of the major tourist attractionsplaces in Vizianagaram which recalls the era of the Vizianagaram dynasty.
  • Moti Mahal : situated inside the campus of Vizianagaram Fort, Moti Mahal is a beautiful royal court or Durbar Hall built in 1869 by Vijayarama Raju-III of the Vizianagaram dynasty. At the entrance of this royal court, there are two marble figures.This Mahalhosts a museum that has artifacts from the past kings who governed the fort.TheMoti Mahaldepicts the antique glory and culture.
  • Tatipudi Reservoir: Situated in the Gosthani river, Tatipudi Reservoir is a beautiful place to visit on weekends. Constructed crosswise in the Gosthani River in 1963-1968, this reservoir supplies waterto Visakhapatnam City. During the months of April and May, this reservoir welcomesvarious species of migrant birds. Apart from the offering beauty of nature and sightseeing of the birds, this reservoir also has a boating facility for tourists.
