Alchi Monastery

Alchi Monastery has a great historical significance because of which it is greatly valued even today. The exact date of the foundation of the monastery is not known, but it is believed to have been built during the 10th century. It was founded by the Tibetan monk Rinchen Zangpo, who was also known as Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. Rinchen Zangpo was a prolific translator of Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit to Tibetan and is credited with introducing Buddhism to Ladakh. Alchi Monastery was built during the rule of the King of Ladakh, Rinchen Zangpo's patron, who was a follower of Buddhism. The monastery was built as a part of a larger project to spread Buddhism in Ladakh and preserve the Buddhist scriptures.
