Bhrigu Lake is a 22km trek from Manali and is a moderate level trek that the beginners with good fitness can also do. Unlike some lake treks in the Himalayan region which are difficult to trek and may take a few days to reach the summit or lake, there are no such complications in Bhrigu Lake trek and reaching the beautiful alpines and the lake is not very difficult. Because of this easy grade, Bhrigu Lake attracts a lot of visitors all round the year.

You can sit near the lake while basking in the sunlight and capturing the stunning panorama where clouds hang low over the lake and make a perfect setting for rejuvenating the senses. The lake remains frozen most time of the year but in summers you can witness the blue green of the pristine water mirroring the mountain peaks. Difficulty Level

Bhrigu Lake trek is a beginner to moderate level trek which, the nature lovers who have not been to a high-altitude trek, can also do. The trail is not very complicated, and neither is very steep half of the way. It is a 22km trek so it can be covered within 2 days without a hassle. If you are a beginner, make sure to keep your fitness in check so that you don’t face any breathing problems while climbing.

Weather Conditions

The temperature during summers varies from 20-25 degree Celsius in daytime and drops to 5-7 degree Celsius at night. in winters, the temperature ranges from 10-15 degrees Celsius at daytime and go to sub zero degree at night. For almost half of the year the lake remains frozen and turns to liquid for 2-3 months in summers. Trekkers can enjoy the sight of snow in mountains even during the summers.

Food Stops

As the trek is at a high altitude, the higher you go the lesser the chances of you getting any shops or eateries. If you are trekking without any professional help on your own in a group, then Manali is the last stop where you will find food items to pack. It is advisable to pack readymade or instantly ready food stuff such as Maggie noodles, oats, eggs, and vegetables that can be easily prepared. You will have to carry stove and kerosene along with utensils to prepare food while camping.

If you are going through some commercial help,then the food and camp accommodation is provided by the trek operators and is freshly prepared in the campsites by the cooks and local guides. During the day, breakfast and lunch is also provided by the trekking management which is usually ready-made food or that can be easily assembled such as a sandwich. Water in the Himalayan region is generally pure enough to boil and drink directly but emergency water bottles must be kept by the trekkers as well.

Roopkund Trek Itinerary

Here is a trekking route for Bhrigu Lake which can be followed if you are going on your own or with camp operators.

  • Day 1 – Reach Gulaba via Manali and trek to Gulaba meadows which is 3km away from Gulaba and stay the night here after setting up your camp or you can trek directly to RolaKholi which is 6km more and camp there.
  • Day 2 – Trek from RolaKholi to Bhrigu Lake which is 10km and trek down again to RolaKholi or Gulaba meadows and camp there.
  • Day 3 – Trek down from Gulaba meadows to Gulaba and drive back to Manali.

The trekking route is flexible and can be altered according to personal preference. If you are fit enough to trek in one day and then come down, you can do so but it may get very tiring and with all that backpack, very cumbersome as well.

Best Time to do Bhrigu Lake Trek

Though, the trek can be done all time of the year, it is advisable to not go during monsoons as the rain is very extreme in Himachal. The best time to do trekking in Bhrigu Lake is from October to May when chances of rain are less, and the weather is pleasant in summers with snow fall in winters. But keep in mind that in winters there is heavy snow, and the trekking route might be closed. So plan accordingly.

  • By Train: The nearest railway station to Manali is Pathankot station at 300km away from where buses are available to Manali every day.
  • By Bus: Buses to Manali are available from all neighboring cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, etc. which is the most convenient option to reach Manali.
  • By Air: You can reach Bhuntar airport in Himachal, which is the nearest from Manali, only a few hours’ drive away. But flights to Bhuntar are not available every time.
