kumbhalgarh fort

Kumbhalgarh is a fortress, from the time of Mewar dynasty on the westerly range of Aravalli Hills, located near Udaipur of Rajasthan state in western India. It is Site included in one of India’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites list - Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

History

Kumbhalgarh fort was built during the 15th century by Rana Kumbha - the ruler of Mewar kingdom in India (the region where the Fort exists), who reigned between 1433-1468 CE.

Architecture/Structure

The Mewari Kumbhalgarh fort is built in Rajput military hill architectural style. It has huge walls and parapets surrounding it.  The perimeter of these walls extends to about 36 km (22 miles) far, making it the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China.

There are over 360 temples within the fort - 300 ancient Jain ones and the rest Hindu temples. From the palace top, it is possible to see deep into the Aravalli Ranges.

Additional Information for Visitors

The Kumbhalgarh fort is situated near the Rajsamand district.

The entry ticket to the fort costs INR 15 for Indian and SAARC country citizens, and INR 200 for other tourists (citizens of all other countries apart from these).

Kumbhalgarh, being a small region, does not have its own airport but it is connected by road to Udaipur city in Rajasthan (which is also known as the city of lakes), and is accessible from most major cities of Rajasthan state like Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar by road.

Udaipur is about 85 km away, and has the nearest airport to Kumbhalgarh. Udaipur is well-connected by air to Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur. Taxis and buses are available here to take people to nearby towns, including Kumbhalgarh easily.

Nearest railway station to Kumbhalgarh fort is Falna railway Junction, which is around 80 km away. This junction is well-connected to the surrounding major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Ajmer, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Built on the foothills of the Aravalli ranges by Rana Kumbh in the 15th century, the majestic fort is surrounded by a wildlife sanctuary and is also the birthplace of the powerful Mewar king Maharana Pratap.
