About the Museum

Reminisced for his bravery, fearless attitude, and headship qualities, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel still inspires many people around the world and continues to be an idol. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial in Ahmedabad is one of the most popular museums housing an invaluable collection of memorabilia associated with Sardar Patel and has more than 10,000 varieties of art and craft. This museum is not just a tourist destination or an educational institute, it is an opportunity for the youth to gain more insight into Sardar Patel and follow the footprints of the Iron Man of India.

The museum was established in the year 1978 and was later enhanced and updated in 2013 with advanced technology for a better experience. At present, the museum is considered one of the best art museums in Gujarat that showcases Sardar Patel’s belongings, a life-sized portrait of his with his family and friends, his journals along with other artworks. The structure of the museum building is as splendor as the exhibitions. It was built in 1622 for Mughal ruler Shah Jahan and was called Motishahi Mahal but was later seized by the Britishers to house their senior officers. After the Indian Independence, the building was announced as the official residence of the Governor of Gujarat and was later transformed into a museum dedicated to Sardar Patel in 1978. The famous poet Rabindranath Tagore also once resided in this building.

Outside the museum, there is a lush green garden with stunning water bodies drawing the attention of birds like peacocks and other animals. The museum has all the advanced facilities like multimedia halls, LCD displays, jail zone, multi-touch tablets, etc. In the multimedia halls, visitors can see documentaries about Sardar Patel and his life in many different languages and the highlight of the museum at the end of the day is the light, sound, and laser show narrating the story of India. The show is spectacular with all the modern technologies with 3D building mapping projection techniques, laser projection, sound, and light effects. A stroll through the museum will give you an insight into Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life and his contributions to the country.
