Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve, located in Tirunelveli district and Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. It is the second-largest protected area in Tamil Nadu and is part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve. The reserve lies at an altitude ranging from 40 metres to 1800 metres and forms the catchment area for 14 rivers and streams. It was established in the year 1988. The ideal time to visit the place is during the months of September to January. A number of activities are also available for tourists that include Nature Trail, Thalayanai, Pothigai, Agasthiyar Falls, Manimuthar Falls and Hope Lake.
The vegetation of the tiger reserve consists of Sarcandra, a rare orchid and Nageia wallichiana. Other tree species include Hopea Parviflora, Hopea Utilis, Calophylum Elatum, Cullenia Exarillata, Artocarpus Hirsute, Syzygium Sp., Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, Macaranga Roxburghii, etc.
Mammals: Elephant, Gaur, Bonnet, Macaque, Common languor, Tigers and Leopards, Chital, Dhole Panther, Sloth Bear, Barking deer, Sambar, Hyena, Wild Dog, Wild Boar, Mouse Deer, Spotted Deer, Jackal, Hare, Porcupine, Mongoose.
Birds: Grey Francolin, Rain Quail, Jungle Bush Quail, Small Buttonquail, Yellow-Legged Button Quail, Barred Button Quail, Red Spurfowl, Painted Spurfowl, Grey Junglefowl, Indian Peafowl, Bar-Headed Goose, Lesser Whistling-Duck, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Spot-Billed Duck, Northern Pintail, Eurasian Wryneck, Speckled Piculet, and many more.
Reptiles: Python, Crocodiles, Lizards and many more.
The ideal time to visit the place is during the months of September to January.
