Established with an objective of popularizing science among the masses through fun exhibits and activities, the Science City is one of the finest science museums in the world.

About the Museum

Established on July 1st, 1997, the Science City in Kolkata is one of the most fascinating and major attractions for the locals as well as the national and international visitors. Developed and administered by the National Council of Science Museums, the Science City has been devoted to the development of science and technology and their application in industry, human welfare, and the environment and is an experience that must be relished at least once.

Constructed on 50 acres of land, the Science City is a perfect amalgamation of learning and fun which appeals to visitors of all ages and tempts them to visit again and again to adore their inner child. The complex has a segment devoted to aquatic life with some very exotic fishes and insects in the aquarium along with other fascinating sections such as Space Odyssey, Dynamotion, Science Exploration Hall, Maritime Centre, Earth Exploration Hall, and a Science Park which offers the visitors the experience of a lifetime. A brief about the different sections of the Science City is as follows:

Earth Exploration Hall

A two-storied semi-circular gallery that houses a permanent exhibition on Earth was opened to the public in December 2008. The details of the Southern Hemisphere are showcased on the ground floor while the details of the Northern Hemisphere are showcased on the first floor. A giant model of Earth cut into 12 longitudinal segments showing significant features of earth such as geology, geography, land, people, flora, and fauna in the expositions captivate the visitors to delve deep.

Space Odyssey

This section houses a Space Theatre, 3D Theatre, Time Machine, Spinning Platform, Mirror Magic, Space Science Van-de-Graaf Generator, several exhibits on Space Science, and a collaborative multimedia kiosk on Solar systems.

Dynamotion Hall

It is a large spiral building offering the visitors numerous interactive exhibits on physical science and takes on a journey to the world of science wherein, visitors can witness the natural phenomenon happening in front of their eyes and appreciate the wonders of nature. The Dynamotion Hall has other segments within the hall such as Power of Ten, Illusions, Aquarium, Butterfly Enclave, Biodiversity, Nano Lab, Physical Science, and Science Show which takes the experience of the Science City to another level.

Maritime Centre

Developed and built-in association with the Kolkata Port Trust, the Maritime Centre illustrates the history and activities of Indian Maritime. Constructed in the shape of a ship, the exhibits displayed here include artifacts, scaled models, and dioramas of shipping as well as a steering system.

Science Park

The Outdoor Science Park welcomes visitors to learn and appreciate the surroundings we live in that are often forgotten in our day-to-day life such as the environment, plants, animals, and other objects. The exhibits displayed outside are made to withstand all kinds of weather conditions and comprise Caterpillar Ride, Gravity Coaster, Musical Fountain, Cable Cars, Monorail Cycle, Road Train, Butterfly Nursery, etc.

Science Exploration Hall

This one is a comparatively new hall and comprises four sections namely - Gallery on emerging technologies, Evolution of Life – A Dark Ride, Panorama on Human Evolution, Science and Technology Heritageof India.
