  • Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary : The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, originally known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary or Hollongapar Reserve Forest before being renamed on May 25, 2004, is an isolated protected area of evergreen forest in Assam's Jorhat district. In 1997, the sanctuary was formally founded and titled. Artificial regeneration was used in the early 1900s to produce a well-stocked forest, resulting in the site's great biodiversity. The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary is home to India's sole gibbons, the hoolock gibbons, as well as Northeastern India's only nocturnal primate, the Bengal slow loris. The Hollong tree dominates the forest's upper canopy, while the Nahar tree dominates the middle canopy. The lower canopy is made mostly of evergreen plants and herbs. On July 30, 1997, the sanctuary was established under the civil district of Jorhat and dubbed the "Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary," after the only apes found in India. It is the only sanctuary in India named after a gibbon since it boasts the highest number of gibbons in Assam.
