Ambernath Shivalaya is a famous ancient temple located in Ambernath city of Maharashtra. Devoted to Lord Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, the temple is believed to have been constructed in 1060 AD, by King Chhittaraja from the Shilahara dynasty. The temple is known as one of the oldest temples in the region.

Known for its unique architecture, Ambernath Shivalaya features sophisticated carvings and sculptures. The massive Shivalinga is the main attraction of the temple, which is about 5ft in height and is situated in the sanctum sanctorum. The temple complex also includes several other smaller shrines devoted to different deities.

Ambernath Shivalaya is a popular destination for both devotees and tourists, especially during the festival of Mahashivratri when the temple is flooded with a large number of visitors.

History

The history of Ambernath Shivalaya dated back to the 10th century AD as the temple is believed to constructed during 1060 AD, by the Shilahara dynasty ruler Chhittaraja.

The architecture of the temple is a blend of both South Indian and Hemadpanthi styles. The sophisticated carvings and sculptures on the walls and pillars of the temple are evidence of the skill and artistry of the craftsmen of that period.

Over the centuries, the temple went through several renovations and restorations. During the 16th century, the temple was renovated by the Nizam Shahi dynasty, who were the rulers of Ahmednagar. In the 19th century, the temple was again renovated under the management of the Peshwa rulers of Pune. During this period, the temple was restored to its former glory and charm, and many new structures were added to the complex.

The Ambernath Shivalaya is located in the city of Ambernath in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Regionally known as Puratana Shivalaya, the temple is located on the bank of the Vadavan River (Waldhuni), nearly 2 km away from Ambernath railway station.

The fair starts 2 days before Mahashivaratri and ends the day after the festival.
