Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area, located in the Himalayan foothills of West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. It is situated at an altitude which ranges from 500 metres to 3,250 metres. The Sanctuary is a part of the Kameng Elephant Reserve and is notable as a prime birding site due to the extraordinary variety, numbers and accessibility of species. Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary got its name from Red Eagle Division of the Indian army which was posted in the area in the 1950s.

Dominant Flora

The Sanctuary is filled with poisonous elephant nettles on either side of the road.

Dominant Fauna

Mammals: Red panda, Clouded leopard, marbled cat, Asian golden cat and leopard cat, capped langur, Asiatic black bear and the vulnerable Arunachal macaque and gaur.

Birds: The Sanctuary is home to at least 454 species of birds and is well known as a major birding area. Some of the birds found are - cormorants, herons, black stork, Oriental white ibis, ducks, hawks, eagles, kites, harriers and vultures, falcons, pheasants, junglefowl, quail, and peafowl, black-necked crane, rails, plovers, and many more.

Butterflies: At least 165 species of butterflies can be spotted here that includes Dusky labyrinth, Bhutan glory, grey admiral, scarce red-forester, tigerbrown, jungle-queen sp, white-edged bushbrown, and white owl.

Reptiles: 24 species of snakes and 7 species of lizards including 3 geckos, 3 agamids and 4 skinks, Abor Hills agama, the Darjeeling false-wolfsnake, Anderson's mountain lizard, Günther's kukri snake, common slug snake, and keelback.

Climatic Conditions

The Wildlife Sanctuary experiences subtropical climate which makes it one of the most picturesque places in the northeast India. A good amount of rainfall and snowfall can be seen during winter months because of the high altitude. The ideal time to visit the Sanctuary is from the months of October to April, the weather remains pleasant during this period.

How to Reach

Nearest Train Station: Bhalukpong is the nearest Train Station, which is located at a distance of 94 km from the Sanctuary.

Nearest Airport: Tezpur is the nearest airport, located at a distance of 150 km from the Sanctuary. A taxi can be hired to reach the sanctuary from the airport.

Road Accessibility : Tawang-Tezpur road connects the sanctuary with popular cities like Tawang located at a distance of 25 km, Tezpur (150 km), and Bomdila (50 km). Bus and taxi services can be taken from the cities mentioned above to reach the sanctuary.
